Young Malaysians are Getting Heart Disease
Heart attack is a fatal disease and the number one killer globally. In Malaysia, heart disease is reported as an extreme threat to Malaysians, specially the age range of patients tends to be much younger when compared to the past and any other Western countries nowadays. Some reasons, including poor eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle, account for this disease.
In 2009, Managing Director of National Heart Institute (IJN), Tan Sri Dr Robaayah Zambahari said that more young individuals below the age of 40 years old, even in their 20s, admitted to hospitals for their heart attacks. According to the national cardiovascular registry, about 49 percent of Malaysian patients, who are between the age of 40 and 60, have the dianosis with heart disease. From these statistics, Dr. Robaayah suggested that heart attack can happen to anyone, at any age, at an alarming rate and there is no diseased limit in any specific group of people. It is time for every Malaysian, especially the young to have knowledge about the number one silent killer in their country.
Besides, she assumed that heart diseases have serious consequences for the country because the people in their 40s to 60s are regarded to be on the top of their work and lives. They may usually be the main person who has a responsibility to support their family.
What causes heart attacks?
In a survey of The National Health and Morbidity in 2011, around 70 percent of Malaysians suffer from hypertension, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol, according to the Heart Foundation of Malaysia (YJM).
The National Heart Association of Malaysia said that the risk factors to heart disease are:
- Stress, especially work-related stress
- High blood pressure
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Blood vessel inflammation
- Tobacco use and overwhelming exposure of tobacco
- Lack of physical exercise
- Unhealthy eating habits, such as drinking soft drink and eating fast food
How to save your heart?
Dr. Robaayah said that Malaysians should learn from Western people for their success in analyzing and handling this mortal disease. People can start helping themselves with these following instructions:
- Reduce and then get rid of some negative aspects, such as fast food, increasingly sedentary lifestyle and work-related stress.
- Protect their health from the very beginning by controlling diet, doing exercise and maintaining an ideal weight.
- Make much more effort to raise the awareness of risk factors and warning symptoms. People should notice any signs in the body, such as chest pain, pressure in shoulders, arms, neck, jaw or the back of the body, shortness of breath or abnormal rate and/or rhythm of the heartbeat.
A lot of things can be done to fight heart disease. People can begin with some small changes in their lifestyle. Healthy habits may lead to a better health and help reduce the risk of heart disease. Because prevention is better than cure.
